Animetrics Proves Leadership in 3D Imaging at the Facial Recognition Grand Challenge

JACKSON, NH - September 13, 2004 - Animetrics Inc., a facial biometrics 3D imaging company, participated in the Second Facial Recognition Grand Challenge Workshop (FRGC) on September 10th, 2004 in McLean, VA. The event, sponsored by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, provided facial biometrics vendors the opportunity to present the results of their testing that was submitted to the FRGC on August 10th, 2004 and to introduce the FRGC Version 2 experiments. The FRGC Version 1 consisted of six facial recognition experiments. Each participating vendor was expected to present the results of at least one experiment. Numerous vendors from around the world participated in the event.

Generating synthetic data from Experiment 1, Animetrics demonstrated the value of normalizing pose in facial recognition systems. Animetrics proved that by taking a 20 degree or 30 degree pose and normalizing that pose to 0,0,0 degrees, it enhanced efficiency of the FRGC Baseline ID system. In order to accomplish this, Animetrics technology generates 3D avatars from a 2D image. Animetrics can take a non-frontal pose and normalize it to 0,0,0 degrees. Or, it can take a frontal pose and produce the pose at varying angles. Overall, Animetrics technology demonstrated to the FRGC its ability to improve accuracy of facial recognition systems which will soon propel the use of facial biometrics in real world applications.
